4 Easy ways to improve Digestion

Considering spending all your $ on random supplements thinking it’ll solve all your digestive dissatisfaction? Start here with these 4 simple tips to improve digestion!

Eat Mindfully

Distracting yourself once you’re finally eating takes away from the experience your body is having with the food. This can cause you to overeat and can stunt the efficiency of your food’s digestion. Your body releases a hormone called ghrelin which sends signals indicating that you’re full. If your eyes are glued to the screen how can you expect to catch those subtle cues?

Small bites & chew your food 15-20x each bite before swallowing

There are professionals in the field who would love to have us all chewing our food 100x per bite- claiming it would solve all digestive issues. I’m not as cruel and a tad bit more realistic, so a healthy goal is 20 bites. Your teeth are POWERFUL for a reason, let them do the heavy lifting and give your body a break

Little to No water for ½ hour before & after eating

Your stomach acid is one of the most crucial factors in proper digestion. It is extremely powerful in its ability to break down food into a mulch-like substance called chyme. It’s also the body’s first line of defense against toxins or pathogens that may have snuck their way onto that unwashed cucumber or spicy salmon roll. When you dilute stomach acid you’re placing a heavier burden on the other digestive organs and prolonging its release from the stomach. Small sips are fine if needed, but let’s keep the chugging to designated drinking hours pls and thanks

Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol 1hr before & after eating

These liquids have a whole other bad rap when it comes to digestion. They prematurely open the pyloric sphincter. This is the small valve that connects the stomach to the small intestine. So let’s say you splashed back a crisp glass of merlot and then proceeded to chow down on a tender ribeye steak. Now your stomach acid has been rendered useless in the stomach and actually damages the intestines because of the quick escape and high acidity- not to mention the food having been released in full form to the remainder of your digestive tract.
